2009 Men’s Health Urbanathlon

November 22, 2009

I participated in the 2009 Men’s Health Urbanathlon at McKinley Hill today, November 22, 2009. I ran 10 kms with a clock time of 1’36”, actual time at 58″. I was late once again.

I enjoyed the race. This is what races should be all about. Fees should be lower than P500 with respectable amount of freebies and average level of commercialism.

Personally I don’t run for freebies, so I don’t mind not receiving a singlet as long as you can keep the costs down. I really appreciate though that they give the shirts only after completion. It makes getting that particular shirt worth it. But then again, this is business for some people. I should understand, I’m a marketing guy and if chances allow, I’d have our company sponsor a similar event real soon. I just hope though that people should run for the right reasons. Until next year.

I had fun at the Urbanathlon too. Our company discourages us from using the elevator to cut down on expenses, so with my office on the 3rd floor, running up and down the stairs several times a day has been a regular fare for me, hence the Vertical climb didn’t seem that difficult for me. I noticed there were less obstacles compared with last year. No beam walks, 4ft hurdles, running up/down pick-ups. Still, the terrain at McKinley was more undulating, making it more sweat-inducing.

My general comment on shirts/singlets is that I wish all the fun-runs had standard sizes. I was a “Small” for Urbanathlon 2008, but for Urbanathlon 2009, “Small” was small and “Large” was just right (Note: I did NOT gain weight since last year. Hehe…). Since there were no sample shirts during registration, I only find out upon receipt of the shirts AFTER the run, that I should have specified a different size. Some funruns have only `free size’ shirts, which are way too large for me.

But I agree with King, we should run for the right reasons, not just for the singlets. =)

thanks. i actually had fun. i usually just pay nowadays for longer distances (15kms up) since logistics and security is hard to do by yourself during weekend runs. hehe. but for urbanathlon, i made the exception because of the hurdles, vertical climb, and the mckinley hill location. last time i dropped by there, forgot which race, hiningal ako. which is why i wanted to take on mckinley hill again. good thing, i didn’t fail myself.
