21 Jump Street is sheer joy but it is not absolutely guilt-free. Some scenes are not suitable for very young audiences but it will surely rock the kid-at-heart. If you think American Pie Reunion makes you feel old, this movie will make you miss high school regardless if you love your high school experience or not.
Come to think of it, some of the people I watched this with just a couple of hours ago are still in high school (I could hear one of them scream in fear afterwards about his mom and – oh – the curfew!) or old enough to have seen movies in black & white due to technology constraints. And yet, the humor, or at the very least the jokes, can transcend decades and generations.
This 21 Jump Street flick had big shoes to fill coming from the iconic partnership between the Johnny Depp and Richard Grieco. I actually remember watching the original TV series as a kid. Good for Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, this movie broke stereotypes in one way or another. Although the partnership between the frustrated cops reeked of bromance, it doesn’t cross the line and over that mountain altogether.
Although Superbad was more critically acclaimed and was actually nice, I only started to adore his antics as that reckless babysitter stuck with those 3 kids from hell in The Sitter. Now, as for Channing Tatum, he may still not win any awards for this (unless those from MTV methinks) but he gives justice to the role as a jock who is completely out of place and out of fashion.
So what are you waiting for! If you don’t know 21 Jump Street or have never watched it, you ain’t COOL.
